This free Coast FIRE calculator uses compound growth to find the portfolio size you need today so your investments grow to your FIRE number by your target retirement age — without any further contributions. Based on the FIRE movement and the concept of coasting to financial independence.
What is Coast FIRE?
Coast FIRE means you have already saved enough that compound growth alone — with no further contributions — will carry your portfolio to your full FIRE number by traditional retirement age. You still need to cover current living expenses with a job, but you can stop saving for retirement entirely and 'coast' the rest of the way.
How do I calculate my Coast FIRE number?
Coast FIRE number = FIRE number ÷ (1 + r)t, where r is your expected annual real return and t is the years until retirement. Example: a $1.5 million FIRE target, 7% real returns, and 25 years to go gives a Coast FIRE number of about $276,000. Reach that today and compounding does the rest.
What is a typical Coast FIRE number by age?
For a $1 million target at age 65 with 7% real returns: roughly $67,000 at age 25, $131,000 at 35, $258,000 at 45, and $508,000 at 55. The younger you are, the smaller the amount needed — time is doing most of the work. This calculator computes your exact number from your own age, expenses, and assumptions.
What is the difference between Coast FIRE and Barista FIRE?
Coast FIRE means you stop saving but keep working full-time to cover expenses until your portfolio matures. Barista FIRE means you also start withdrawing: a part-time job covers part of your expenses while the portfolio covers the rest, beginning now. Coast FIRE preserves the portfolio untouched; Barista FIRE draws on it early.
What return rate should I use for Coast FIRE planning?
Most planners use a real (after-inflation) return of 5-7% for a stock-heavy portfolio, based on long-run historical averages. Using real returns means your Coast FIRE number is in today's dollars and your target FIRE number keeps its purchasing power. More conservative assumptions raise the number you need today.
Am I already at Coast FIRE?
Enter your current portfolio, age, and planned retirement age into this calculator. If your existing balance is at or above your Coast FIRE number, you have hit the milestone — further retirement saving is optional, and every dollar you do add simply brings full financial independence closer.
